João Leong Kam Chun, the chairman of Telediffusion of Macao Co., Ltd. (Teledifusão de Macau S.A.), said that TDM would focus on developing the news department to increase profits.

“It was really hard to operate a TV station in Macao because in Macao, whenever people turned on the TV, TVB (Television Broadcasts Limited) was always their first choice”, said Leong yesterday during his speech in Hong Kong Shue Yan University. He said that TDM had been oppressed by TVB and even ATV (Asia Television Limited) so badly that TDM did not even dare to survey its own audience rating.

Last year, Leong joined TDM and decided to reform the structure of TDM to increase profits. He found that news might be their selling point because audiences need local news. It was also TDM's advantage over Hong Kong TV stations like TVB and ATV, which only broadcasted news focused on Hong Kong.

So he began to develop the news department with a few obstacles.

“Macao is a small city. Unlike Hong Kong, breaking news like suicide and traffic accidents seldom take place in Macao and neither do people take part in demonstration a lot”, he said, “so we are trying to send journalists to other countries or areas to produce news. We’ve sent them to Russia, London and other countries and they’ve brought quite a lot of good news to Macao audience.”

According to the latest data provided by Leong, TVB shares 60% of the news audience rating in Macao when TDM shares 46%. Leong thought it’s already a big improvement because they expected worst.

TDM is a public-owned TV station. Also, Leong was appointed by Macao government. Facing the query that whether TDM will be somehow controlled by the government, Leong responded that Macao government never interfere with their daily operation.
