“Prepaid garbage bag and waste disposal fee system of Taipei will be followed in Hong Kong waste disposal.” said CHAN, Bernard, Chairman of the Council for the sustainable Development.

CHAN insisted it is difficult to explore a technically possible method for charging the household waste in Hong Kong. He pointed that Hong Kong will take Taipei city as a model since the system of household pre-paid designated garbage bags have successfully helped to reduce 60% of the garbage since 2000. But still Hong Kong is still facing difficulties while most of the citizens are lived in buildings and it is hard to handle garbage in a fixed place like Taipei do.

CHAN said that it is the crucial time to implement the scheme of waste charging as the major landfills in Hong Kong are going to be saturated. CHAN insisted that the scheme is to encourage people to reduce waste disposal, but not to charge money from people. “The main point is that the more garbage you reduced, the less you need to pay for it.”” CHAN added.
