The people of Hong Kong must treasure and defend the city’s unique and vibrant culture, Dai Tien said. Dai, an influential poet, writer and journalist, disputed a long-held belief that Hong Kong is a cultural desert. The poet, born in Mauritius in 1937, was educated in the National University of Taiwan. He moved to Hong Kong upon graduation. He was a prolific writers, founder and editor of a number of influential literary magazine, playing an instrumental role on promoting contemporary poetry. Speaking to students of Shue Yan University, Dai urged students to change their perception that Hong Kong is a culture desert. He stressed that Hong Kong is a vibrant city with a unique and rich culture. He also challenged suggestion that Cantonese is inferior to Putonghua. “Cantonese has a longer history, it preserves many ancient words and their ancient pronunciations which are absent in Putonghua. Reading ancient poetries in Cantonese allows us to appreciate the beauty of the literary work. The rhythms are not right when reading them in Putonghua,” he said.
