The head of the Teledifusão de Macau (TDM, Macau) , the only public broadcast service of the city ,claimed that he is trying to turn the tide of the ill-fated TV station.

Facing strong competition from Hong Kong’s stations, TDM (Macau) has suffered from disastrous viewership since its establishment. João Leong Kam Chun, the president of TDM’s executive committee, said at a Hong Kong college seminar that TDM had started to reform to save the station.

“We need to fight back from HK’s TVB & ATV‘s bullying,” Leong said.

He explained that HK’s TV stations has lured most of the Macau audience with their strong drama and commentary programs. Suffering from the unfavorable circumstances, TDM (Macau) can only attract the public by providing unique, local news programs.

“We give local news to our locals,” Leong said.

After a series of reforms at TDM, the news and public affairs programs are increasing in popularity. The station is now operating with a new studio and has more professional production tools. “We can’t let our men fight without weapons,” he said of the new equipment.

TDM is a government owned services, and Leong justified self-censorship toward their daily news. He confessed that they are being conservative when handling the news , especially related to local’s triad and the Peking government.

“Macau is just a small place.” He added that the city is only backed by its gambling industry and the Peking government, so the station needs to unite Macau citizens and not be divisive.

“We have to save ourselves,” he said.
