The Movie and Television Culture in Hong Kong

Mr. Tsui Siu Ming, the Chief Operating Officer of i-cable Satellite Television Limited, was invited to give a speech about “The Movie and Television Culture in Hong Kong” in Hong Kong Shue Yan University today, and sharing with students his experiences of his career.

Due to the paparazzo often exaggerate the truth, Hong Kong’s entertainment news are being disparaged and ignored. Mr. Tsui criticized that they are the one who do not know the meaning and purpose of entertainment news. So, he set a goal for himself: change people’s impression of entertainment news, use the simple words to express or describe the deeper meanings. He added that the university student are the future of entertainment news industry, he hoped that the bad impression could be removed because of students’ persistence and ambition.

Mr. Tsui said that because of the bad impression of entertainment news, so many people are not willing to be an entertainment reporter. This is a big problem and challenge for him to set up a 24 hours entertainment news program. In order to find more talented person and solve the shortage of labour, he required the candidate should be university student, have a good command of both written and spoken English and Chinese, as well as have the professional news reporting attitude.

Then, there are some other difficulties when he set up the program in the beginning, for example, he was challenged by the other television station, and the singers were not willing to have an interview and the like. But after three years, they changed peoples’ impression towards entertainment news successfully, gained the trust by the actors and singers, and they finally were willing to have an interview. Mr. Tsui insisted that it was because they have the goals: reporting with truth and genuineness, never be the paparazzo.

Mr. Tsui said that Hong Kong’s university students still haven’t get ready for work after graduate, they don’t know what is the world happening, and they even don’t know how to write an application letter. Compare with the students from mainland, their senses and edification is worse. Hong Kong students are fond of material pleasures; they couldn’t pay attention on study because there are too many attractions. He advised university students should recognize the target and work hard to meet the goal, pay more attention on the changing of society, including the entertainment news. Also learn more different knowledge continually, pursuing the knowledge and explore in an unceasing manner are important.

As a person in charge of entertainment news program Tsui agreed that he has missed the childhood, but he hasn’t regret anymore because that was the chance for him to learn more and equip himself. He believed that poor people would contest every chance actively, so he reaffirmed that equip ourselves and wait for the chances are the keys to success. Impossible is nothing as he never gives up meeting the goal. He hopes that people could understand what entertainment news is and change people’s bad impression towards the entertainment news in the future.
