April Chan, the Past President of HKICS, said the chartered secretary was still not recognised by the WTO as a profession and it was a long journey to get the approval.

Chan, the Past President of the Hong Kong Institute of Chartered Secretaries (HKICS), said the World Trade Organization (WTO) recognizes lawyers, accountants and engineers as the professions, but the chartered secretaries still do not been approved. She said the name list of professions was confirmed many years ago and it was hard to change in a short period of time.

“It is not easy to add into the profession name list as we have to get all the supports from the other 154 countries,” said Chan. She also said it was a long journey to fight for the approval as the name list would not be changed easily.

When was asked that why it was difficult to be an eligible chartered secretary with an increasing number of this position, Chan said there were no degree courses major in profession of chartered secretary in Hong Kong, and there were only a few person could get the eligibility successfully. Therefore, it was difficult for the employers to hire the professional chartered secretaries.
