The deterioration of soap opera

By WONG, HIU WA

14th February 2012

“Heaven and Earth”, the soap opera of TVB recently, has become sparkle in the talk of the town. For this, Ho Yuet Fun suggested that television program producer should create more programs in a special style.

Ho Yuet Fung, the Former Managing Director of CBS Broadcast International Asia Inc., was invited to Shue Yan University to share “the characteristics of Triple Play Communications”.

The theme of “Heaven and Earth” is in minority, and is not welcomed by housewives, who are the major audience of the soap opera. However, because it always reflects social conflicts, it attracts lots of young people to watch it.

Thus, Ho believed that television programs should be more creative in order to attract those younger audiences, as they are the core audience in the future.

Moreover, Ho pointed out that the theme of soap opera in Hong Kong is less than foreign soap opera. It is because they have large creative space and can broadcast some political sensitive issues in non-prime time or cable television. So, viewers can select the program by their preference and interest.

People always think that most high rating of a television program relies on the support of housewives. Ho thought it may be related to the poor quality of the program. She appealed to the television station that they should not use rating as a sole criterion to determine the quality of program.

To improve this situation, Ho suggested television stations to attract more new blood to bring more new and creative ideas, by improving the working condition and environment of script writers.
