Prof.CHEUK Pak Tong,Hong Kong Baptist University, Professor Emeritus, attended to the New Faculty Week of Shue Yan University this afternoon.

Pak Tong was not optimistic about the future of the Hong Kong film industry. He said it is impossible to revitalize the film industry, at present, only the local market is left, so that the box office revenue of each film is not as good as before, resulting in a large decrease in the number of local production, every year, 300 are reduced to only 30. He said that it is now the low tide of the Hong Kong film industry, and the Government only subsidizes the filming of three Hong Kong films every year.

Pak Tong believed that if the Chinese government can relax the trial system, it will enable the Hong Kong market to enter the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area market, increase box office revenue and promote the development of the Hong Kong film industry. He said, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has 9 cities and 70 million people, and the market is huge. Moreover, the cultural background of local residents is similar to that of Hong Kong people. It is an audience of Hong Kong films. However, due to the Chinese government's film censorship system, Hong Kong films have not been shown in the local area.

In recent years, many directors have turned to the mainland market. Pak Tong said that it is a good thing for Hong Kong directors to go to the mainland to develop. He pointed out that Hong Kong movies have many advantages, especially with a good standard system. He believes that if Hong Kong directors can establish their own foundation in Hong Kong and then go to the Mainland to develop, there is no problem. However, if they even go to the Mainland without even laying a good foundation in Hong Kong, they will certainly fail. He suggested that Hong Kong directors should first understand the culture of the Mainland and lay a solid foundation in Hong Kong in order to capture good movies in China.
