A Chinese media scholar said that microblogging helps mainland media cross the line when covering politically sensitive issues.

Weibo, meaning microblogging in Chinese, is popular in China. According to Tencent Weibo, one of biggest microblogging services in the country, they have had over 2.3 billion users in the second quarter of this year.

Qian Gang, Director of the China Media Project at the University of Hong Kong’s Journalism and Media Studies Centre, remarked that Weibo is “the gift from God that you cannot miss” while reviewing the Chinese press’s coverage on the Wenzhou train collision in July.

A few days after the collision, the authority ordered all media in the territory to only report news from the state-owned press. Commentary and editorials were prohibited at the same time. Commercial newspapers across the country had to amend the whole front page in accordance with the instructions. However, they uploaded their original front page coverage to microblogging sites.

Qian commented that the usage of weibo in the incident shows a breakthrough of reporting in China.

[Another great article. Keep up the good work!]
