If one day you forgot to bring your Octopus card with you, you will find yourself scrambling for coins throughout the whole day. Octopus card has made our lives coinless and indeed this is what the Octopus Card Company has been aiming to achieve, said by Miss Prudence Chan, Chief Executive Officer of the Octopus Cards Limited.

Miss Chan mentioned at a talk at the Hong Kong Shue Yan Univeristy yesterday that the ultimate goal of their company is to replace the petty coins in our wallets. While majority of the public think that credit card is the biggest competitor of the Octopus cards, Miss Chan said their number one competitor is indeed cash and coins. According to Miss Chan, the public will only use credit cards for transcation when the value is about $100 or above so there is no clash of usage of the Octopus and credit cards.

When asked what level of penetration Octopus cards want to achieve in our daily lives, Chan said that the company hopes Octopus cards will be widely used in payments of supermarkets, stationey shops, convenience stores or even dessert shops.
