The price of Hong Kong Economic Journal has risen from $6 to $8 since early September. Tim Chan, Executive Chief Editor of the newspaper, said the sales of the newspaper would not largely reduce although there was a price change.

The price of Hong Kong Economic Journal increased over 30 percent this month. It becomes the first Chinese newspaper who makes a change of price in the recent years. “The sales of Hong Kong Economic Journal would undoubtedly diminish due to the increase in price,” Chan said in a general assembly held by Hong Kong Shue Yan University today.

Chan explained the situation with microeconomics and the theory of price elasticity. He said an increase in price was adversely affecting the newspaper’s sales, but he believed that readers would accept the price change because newspaper was an inelastic product. “Newspaper is a necessary and it only costs people little money. There is only a small amount of decrease in sales,” said Chan.

Though there is a rise in price of the printed newspaper, the cost of its online subscription remains unchanged. However, this does not mean that the online version could not make money. Chan told the number of readers who made online subscription to Hong Kong Economic Journal was more than the number of those who buy a newspaper as the online version allowed young people to obtain information easily.

“The media industry is focusing on online news reporting these days,” Chan said.
