The insecurity of being a state actor

“Being a state actor in Hong Kong, I feel insecurity,” said by the well-known stage actor and director Joey Leung Jo-yiu.

“In Broadway, USA, the director find actors through interview, however, in Hong Kong, the selection of actors is inside the backroom deals,” Leung explained, theater is a small scale industry, insiders know each other, the directors have already selected their candidates through their social network, interviews are exist in name only.

“Also, I care what people say about me, I review myself from people's comment,” Leung said this is another reason cause his insecurity.

No matter how insecurely of being a state actor, Leung still loves theater the most, “I love to share with audiences directly and instantly, and acting on stage is the best way,” he said.

Leung believes that theater must be direct rendering, “theater can only show on stage, recording the live show to DVD is pointless!” he criticized. “DVD and theater are totally two different arts from, audiences can only watch our performance on DVD, but they can’t join, and theater needs interaction.”

Joey Leung Jo-yiu won the 14th Hong Kong Drama Best Actor Award (for comedy or farce) for his one-man show, "Queer Show", which had fifth run already because of popular demand.
