The media must take a social responsibility

Mr. Lai Yu Ching, Vice President of Now sport channel, believed that media must take a responsibility to promote local sport development. And he said the potential of sport TV program development is great.

“Although the viewing ratio of Hong Kong Standard Chartered Marathon is low, but I insist that we must reporting it in live. Also, lots of resources are used, including five helicopters.” He thought as the local sport media, they have the responsibility to support the local sport development, not is only concern of with commercial benefit.

In resent years Football Gambling is legitimated. He said that Now Sport Channel is a domestic program, therefore, he bans hosts to mention any gambling content. Lai believed if gambling information likes football odds, dividend are included, it affects the young, and promote the gambling activity indirectly.

“There are many ways to get the gambling information, likes internet and Jockey Club. As a media, we should provide positive information, such as local sport event, the competition process and result.”

Many people thought the development of sport TV program’s outlook is narrow, but Lai held the opposite opinion. “The local sport TV program manufacture trend internationalization, many local professionals are invited to work in other Asian countries.” He also pointed there are high quality of local football TV program, is second to none in Asia, even approaches England’s level.

“The News is regional, but the sport news is global. The development potential is great. Besides, as the technical progressing, the sport news and event can be transferred to different places immediately. It is advantage of sport news. ” Lai said “So that the locals who engages in sport TV program, can go abroad for further development if they have good language ability.”
