Former TV drama Script writer of TVB, Ho Yuet Fung, commented on the quality of the current TV soap opera when she was attending a university talk. “Frankly speaking, it is so poor.” She said.

She revealed that it might be a consequence from advanced technological changes and worsening producer working conditions.

Ho Yuet Fung said, there were only two major television corporations in Hong Kong, resulting a small demand of curators. When there was no much competitive force existing, the working condition had no way out to get improved. She pointed out that there was a huge causal relationship between production quality and the two working conditions and creation space. She cited an example, explaining she used to have a week time to finish a half-hour drama script. However, producers and script writers nowadays are provided with less time for creation work.

The publics always blame on Plagiarism, criticizing Hong Kong drama always borrow the story plot from foreign soap operas. Ho Yuet Fung said “I have to admit that the current production obviously involves plagiarism. But I tell you, a decade ago, producers always copy other production story board.”

The essential difference is the advanced technology make audience become more sensitive to plagiarism, as audience are exposed to many other soap operas online.

“Plagiarism is common. There is no special news in common story line. Only the way it tells the story matters.” Ho Yuet Fung said. The most important thing is producers and script writer must possess creativity in choosing footage, in order to tell a new story in the eyes of audience.

Although Hong Kong soap operas are receiving lower and lower rating, Ho said it is not the matter of audience’s conservative attitude.

She cited the controversial drama When Heaven Burns as example. “It is alright to have open-minded issue like eating human flesh as topic. But it has to choose the right time to get it on air! I totally cannot understand why it is put on TV at prime time.” “It returns to the matter of moral at the end.” Ho continued. She said if the topic is controversial and or even in PG, might be it is better to push the on air time backward.

To raise the rating again, Ho Yuet Fung suggested the two major television broadcasting corporation collecting more opinions from audience online.

“In the new era of advanced technology, interactivity is important.” Ho emphasized. She said it is easy to conduct surveys online. The way out for TV drama is to fit audience appetite.
