Macau public broadcaster Teledifusão de Macau (TDM) is ready for a revolution – showing a brand new image and news production to audiences, the managing director of TDM, João Leong Kam Chun, said in a university assembly this afternoon.

Leong pointed out that it is difficult to run a television company in Macau, because of the strong competition from Hong Kong – TVB and ATV. “Macau citizens usually watch TVB, or ATV, rather than choosing TDM. It seems like we are being bullied by Hong Kong’s media,” Leong said.

Leong and his colleagues figured out that they could not easily produce high quality dramas or commentary show, so they planned to reform the news team.

“No people can live without knowing their cities’ news and we understand that’s way for us to survive, thus we focus on developing news production – especially for Macau citizens,” said Leong.

TDM has chosen several methods to encourage journalists to produce better quality news reports, such as rewarding the best rating news, systematizing the news department, offering promotion opportunities to journalists, and encouraging journalists to cover stories overseas. In the last case, many journalists applied when TDM sent reporters to London, Russia and Taiwan. Leong noted these are all effective ways to reform the company, and which has successfully raised the rating of TDM.

Leong revealed there is a huge outflow of talent from Macau media, which is a hurdle for the company in its efforts to reform. “The government loves to invite our journalists to work as civil servants, since they know about the environment of Macau thoroughly and they have built up strong relationship with people from all walks of life in Macau. We just look like the training school for civil servants. We feel reluctant to keep journalists who are full of experience in Macau to stay in our company.”
