Reported by Hung Tsz Yan, 15th October 2019, Mandy YIU Yun Ma, Actors' Family, Executive Director, attended the Hong Kong Shue Yan University General assembly today said the theatre companies in Hong Kong are facing many difficulties. She pointed out that the Hong Kong Theatre Company faces different problems in terms of audience, talent cultivation, resources and venues.

Mandy YIU Yun Man said that the biggest problem facing all the troupes in Hong Kong is the lack of audience. She pointed out that Hong Kong has fewer and fewer people to watch the drama. Her musical troupe has a performance about 4,000-5,000 spectators, and the troupe has 10,000 spectators. However, the average small and medium-sized theater has less than 2,000 spectators. The Hong Kong troupe also faces the problem of insufficient resources. She pointed out that the production cost of musicals is very high, and the funds that can be used to breed new works and cultivate talents are not enough. In order to maintain the artistic quality of the troupe, the troupe can only find other resources on its own.

Mandy YIU Yun Man said that apart from the lack of resources, it is difficult to nurture talents. The current curriculum offering the cultivation of musical or theatrical performances in Hong Kong is far from enough. Therefore, the troupe is another issue in terms of talent cultivation. Hong Kong's copyright laws also face difficulties in their creation. In addition, the current Hong Kong copyright law is not mature enough to protect the author's work, which leads to restrictions on the adaptation of the work.
