Tight Copyright Law amendment suffocates creativity

Legal consultant sees ban of derivative creation weird.

By Anthony Wong

HKSYU, APR 24 –Despite the soaring trend of derivative creation, the government is planning to amend the Copyright Law to restrict such creativity.

But for Geordie Toh, a legal consultant, it would be an unhealthy act to over-restrict creativity of web users to post derivative work of political irony.

‘I would feel weird and disappointed if derivative works, like putting characters of novels as similes of political figures, are all banned and become illegal,’ said Toh.

According to Toh, political irony pieces towards Henry Tang Ying-yen, the former Chief Executive candidate, have successfully shown creativity of web users and are good ironies towards the scenario at that time.

‘ I appreciate that piece putting Tang’s face onto the poster of Harry Potter and the Chamber of secret. That’s a good simile,’ added Toh.

The third reading of the amendment will be undergone in May 7. Critiques worries such amendment would restrict the freedom of speech of the town.
