LI JING WEN Report

“It is the best of times to do news ”, Tim Chan said in a General Assembly talk held by Hong Kong Shue Yan University today. “People do need finance and economics information. There is a market, and there is hope”,though fewer people buy newspapers.

Chan became a financial journalist for Ming Pao as soon as he graduated in 1986. He has reported for several major newspapers for nearly a quarter century. Now he is the executive chief editor of the Hong Kong Economic Journal. “I have already stayed with finance and economics news for 25 years”, he had a grin and laughed.

Forty years ago, the Economic Journal started reporting on finance and economics. However, in the early 1980s, they could only devote two pages for financial news. Now, every media, not only newspapers but also TV programs, has financial news reports. Chan said this trend reflects the progress of society. More citizens are concerned about economics intentionally or otherwise.

Chan also noted how a third round of quantitative easing (called QE3 for short) could have a great impact on citizens. There's little use in putting money into bank accounts as inflation is soaring, he said. Even one meal would cost thirty yuan, almost doubled in Hong Kong. The pressures on living conditions have increased.

Chan said, “Economics enters our lives unconsciously, leading people to demand specialized finance and economics information.”

Along with scientific development and society's progress, demand for information has sharply increased while the newspaper business is losing its readers at an accelerated rate.

Chan thought the press would have a field day as long as people actively involved with information. Thanks to the iPhone, iPad and 3G network, people have more ways to gain information. The information update is a lot faster. Online news even gets updated each minute.

“Hong Kong is on its way to becoming an international financial Centre”, said Chan. He pointed out London, as one of the international financial centres, has the Financial Times,New York has The Wall Street Journal, but Hong Kong doesn’t have one. Chan strongly believed that Hong Kong should have specialized medium to support the development of key economic regions. He puts high expectations on Hong Kong and Hong Kong’s news.
