Tim Chan: The newspaper industry is dying

Smartphones have become popular in the last few years, and people are starting to read the news on their smartphones instead of holding newspapers. Tim Chan, the executive chief editor of the Hong Kong Economic Journal, said the newspaper industry of Hong Kong is dying, but for the whole journalism industry, there are still lots of opportunities for reporters to work on.

“Technology is replacing ordinary newspapers,” said Chan. He said it is hard to see someone holding newspapers in public transport nowadays. “ There are only very few people that are still reading paid print newspaper, without a new audience, the sales of printed newspaper are declining. ”

Then does the journalsim industry have a future? Chan used two examples to answer this question. “ The disc industry is dying, but people still love to listen to music; The newspaper industry is dying, but people are more eager to getting news information.”

Chan predicted that in the future, news will flourish in the online and smartphone platform. He said journalism students should not be too pessimistic about the future, students should work hard and equip themselves with different knowledge for the challenging future.
