To attain universal suffrage , ready or not? 


       "Universal suffrage is possible in Hong Kong.”Miss TAM Wai-chu, Maria who is one of the Basic Law Consultative Committee members said yesterday in Hong Kong Shue Yan University. She believed that the time now is not ripe for universal suffrage.

       Maria said that it is difficult for the central government to give immediate response, although a majority of public opinion supports universal suffrage. According to the situation of Hong Kong, universal suffrage must progress in a gradual and orderly manner, since the political development of Hong Kong is a Complex issue.  "To implement universal suffrage in Hong Kong, it has to balance the interests of all parties and pass the rigorous scrutiny." Maria said.

        Besides, Maria talked about the education of Basic law in Hong Kong. She thought that Hong Kong people still don't have enough knowledge of basic law, although it has been ten years after Hong Kong was returned to China. It seems that there is a room to further promote and educate Hong Kong people about the Basic Law.
