Allen Ha, Chairman of Lantau Development Alliance, suggested that

the Government should improve the facilities for visitors specifically at

Tung Chung, mainly in exhibition and hotel industries.

Ha said today at Shue Yan University, there is a crucial need at Tung Chung

to develop facilities for both local citizens and visitors. Recent critics pointed out that Hong Kong has been the “supermarket” of the

mainland visitors, who bring both significant profits and heavy pressures to

Hong Kong. Ha explained, as

the visitors doubled in these three years, the facilities at Tung Chung are

obviously not enough to manage the huge amount of visitors, especially from

mainland.

He said the development at Tung Chung is too slow, visitors now tend to

expend in downtown area, such as Tsim Sha Tsui. “Reducing the overwhelming

visitors is just a short-term solution, which leads to the run off of economic.

The effective way is to develop Lantau, especially Tung Chung, in order

to mitigate the pressure at downtown areas”, he commented.

He said, mainland visitors are in high expenses group which other countries

are fighting for; Hong Kong should therefore keep these visitors by developing

a new area. He believed the most possible and suitable choices to develop

at Tung Chung, are exhibition and hotel industries.
