(It is not "conducted" sex reassignment surgery, we say "underwent" instead. I think you have the numbers wrong. She said there are between 10 to 20 thousand transgender in Hong Kong.)

Chairperson of Transgender Resource Center Joanne Leung feels confident about the openness of accepting transgender people in Hong Kong in near future.

Joanne Leung, 50 year-old, conducted sex reassignment surgery to become female in 2004 in order to release her from stress and upset. She stated, sometimes she feels puzzled even though finished the surgery. She explained that she is a lesbian who is in love with females.

Leung believes that people in this generation are more open-minded and rational. With the help of the movement to arouse the public awareness and concerns towards transgender issue, Hong Kong people will be more willing to accept the transgender people in near future.

Leung stated government should provide more medical support for people who are suffering from gender identity disorder including the increase of hospitals providing sex reassignment surgery.

‘Transgender’ is defined as the state of one's gender identity or gender expression not matching one's assigned sex. it is estimated that there are 1000 – 2000 transgender people in Hong Kong. And there are 200 people conducted sex reassignment surgery. It is a surgical procedure that a transgender person's physical appearance and function of their existing sexual characteristics are altered to resemble that of their identified sex.
