Some people judge an issue simple from what the media have told them. However, a professional reporter should read more and be knowledgeable on different areas to make an article depth enough, said Candy Lo, deputy chief editor from Hong Kong China News Agency.

Reporter: Tsai Ka Yi

Candy, who has been reporting news on financial, educational and political for years since 2004, pointed out that a reporter should have a wider range of knowledge and experiences than normal citizens. “It is essential for a journalist to equip with general knowledge, instead of focusing on your own beat. It is not only the issues concerning Hong Kong, it is about the whole China and all over the world,” said Candy, in a seminar held in Hong Kong Shue Yan University last week.

“Reading is always the best way to equip you. Say if you are going to write an article on China’s political scene, you have to read related books or articles that are in-depth enough to discuss over that area. Or else your article would not be at a high standard,” said Candy. She also pointed out that a good reporter needs to have a critical mind and to analysis the issue calmly, “you have to see things with your own mindset and knowledge; do not get lead by someone.”

Candy said she understood that being a reporter is not easy, “however, journalists are always an important part of the society. We have to keep up and use our power to bring benefit and change the society and country.”
