Two more proposed to save CWDs--075061 2009年10月20日 (二) 19:56 (UTC)

Dr. Andy Cornish denounced the HKSAR government in making a dangerous move towards building the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. The consequences to the China White Dolphins in the surrounding area are uncertain.

“We have proposed two Marine Parks in Brothers Islands and Tai O to protect China White Dolphins, but only Brothers Islands is being approved,” he said.

The importance for having Marine Park is to ensure CWDs will be able to have enough food, but overfishing has been a serious problem in Hong Kong. Dr. Cornish said the number of fish has plummeted during the past few decades. “Comparing to the fishery in the 1970s, the average size of fish in Hong Kong now is 10 grams, the size is very small as you can imagine,” he said.

“The Brothers is a hotspot where dolphins will be found, but in the future, there will be reclamation in the area, it is possible dolphins move away and never use that area,” referring to the Brothers Islands. Dr. Cornish hopes the designated area not only protects the hot spot, and to protect nearby reclamation from getting very close to the hot spot.
