An architecture expert at Hong Kong University (HKU) hoped the public could persuade the Development Bureau to develop an underground city in the West Kowloon Cultural District.

Prof. K P Cheung, the associate professor from Department of Architecture of HKU, said today in Shue Yan University that building an underground city in the reclamation region of the West Kowloon Cultural District was much easier than building it inland.

“The inland may have buried bombs. For reclamation region, there will not be any big stones there. The area is also big enough,” Cheung explained, “Nowadays, the land price is very expensive. It is about 12,000 per square feet. If we make use of underground space, it is free.”

Prof. K P Cheung suggested Hong Kong to take advantage of its Geo-Geometric- Golden Ratio, which is a world wonder recently discovered by himself. He said Hong Kong should be a pioneer around the world to develop the first museum or underground shopping center which uses Geometric- Golden Ratio as its theme.

“West Kowloon Cultural District plan was confirmed in 2006 and the finance committee of Legislative Council had already passed the budget in the June of 2008; however, the number of tourists will be tripled when the Express Rail Link operates in the future. This plan cannot cater for their needs and will slow down the development of Hong Kong,” Cheung said.

He added he had already suggested his proposal to the Town Planning Board but did not receive any reply.
