A newspaper's design depends on its character and tone, said the art director of Sing Tao Group, adding that Metro Daily's layout, for example, is dramatic but may not be effective.

Danny Wong, the art director of Sing Tao Group, attended the assembly of Shue Yan University today. He said it was miserable that a student thought Metro Daily turned worse after using bigger and colorful photos and headings.

He explained that “package is similar to a person”. The effect of package or dressing still depends on the personal characteristics of that product or that person. “Package requires the product itself possesses uniqueness,” Wong said, “You see another person wore a pair of beautiful sneakers and then you bought the same pair. Does it mean that you are as smart as him or her? It is not the case.”

He used Healiner and am730 as an example, showing that even these two free newspapers put emphasis on layout and design, they still have their own principles and target audiences, so that the packages could create a better effect base on their uniqueness.

“Am730’s style is magazine-like. There can be no news photos but only graphic or cartoons on the front page. It targets the middle class; For Headliner, news photos is a must on the front page and its target audience is much more diverse. It is livelier in style,” Wong said.
