Lu Tak Ming, the CEO of Yan Oi Tong, said at a university speech yesterday that the universal retirement protection scheme is not the best way to solve the aging problem.

With the age population, some political parties urge the government to introduce universal retirement protection scheme. However, Lu said that it needed more study and public discussion.

“In my opinion, the universal retirement protection scheme is not the only and best solution. It won’t always work,” said Lu.

Lu said universal retirement protection is a long term policy that would increase Hong Kong welfare expenses. "Hong Kong is a low tax rate city. Are we able to cope with the tremendous expenditure?"

He added that many European countries such as Greece and Spain introduced universal retirement protection scheme, and that was the major reason of European sovereign-debt crisis.

“The universal retirement protection scheme causes a huge expenditure and citizens want more protection from government. Eventually these countries can not pay the debt,” said Lu.
