Universal suffrage needs a timetable

A secretary of the government said Hong Kong still need more time to achieve universal suffrage.
Stephen Lam Sui-lung, JP, Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, said it is very important of the route to universal suffrage as the details of 2012 Legislative Council election will also be changed.
When asked about the greatest obstacle to political development of universal suffrage, Lam considered that there are many obstacles. He explained that the idea of a democratic political system need to have wide support in the Legislative Council to obtain two-thirds of the votes, which is very different to achieve.
“The election of Chief Executive by universal suffrage still have sufficient time to prepare. In order to implement more smoothly, we will take the less difficult policy to implement.” Lam said the government will try her best to held the Chief Executive Election and Legislative Council elections by universal suffrage from 2017 and 2020 respectively.
