Universal suffrage should not be delayed

In recent years, some citizen said that universal suffrage should be accomplish in 2012, but the government always refuse and said Hong Kong will have universal suffrage on both of the election of Chief Executive and the Legislative Councilors in 2017. Anson Chan thinks that government should listen all rounds of idea, and should not delay the universal suffrage.


The former Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs. Anson Chan Fang On Sang, participated in the General Assembly organized by the Department of Journalism and Communication of the Hong Kong Shue Yan University yesterday, “the government has the difference between those who are close and those who are distant, and government will only listen what they want only and vice versa.” Chan said, and for the sake of getting more opinions from citizen, she believes that government should listen all rounds of idea, “this is the difference between and closed society and open society.” Chan said.


With regard to the Chief Executive Mr. Donald Tsang Yam-kuen said it is time to tackle the economic problems rather than discuss the political reform, “under Basic Law, Hong Kong people have the right of universal suffrage, he is now protecting the benefic of a group of people, but giving up the long term development of Hong Kong.” Chan’s comment and


Few months ago the Macau SAR government had finished the legislation of Article 23 completed, and some newspaper believes that the Chinese government wants to push force to Hong Kong SAR government to legislate Article 23. “Hong Kong people have a higher demand in freedom of human rights than Macau people; otherwise it will not have 500,000 citizens come out for procession in 2003.” Chan said.


When talking about the media, Chan thought that media should be indifferent, and do not write something which is incorrect, “The influence of media to society is very big, it is extremely important to find out the fact before reporting.” Chan told students.
