Universal value is the key to success, says a film director

"If the concept of the movie is about the universal value, it can fulfill audiences who are located in the lowest hierarchy." the film director, Lo Chi Leung said at Hong Kong Shue Yan University Weekly Forum today.


Titanic is one of the best selling movies around the world. Due to the universal value permeates into the film. Lo took it as an example, he pointed mostly viewers thought it is a romantic and miserable love story. However, he thought the gimmick of this film is a hierarchical culture. Because the poor sacrificed their life to save nobles in the last scene.


Lo stressed the advances of emotional or events is important in the movie. He explained if there was a conflict form timeline A to timeline B, it will be meaningful. On the contrary, it is meaningless if the scene is nothing happened.

Lo pointed out that film is a kind of commercial product that assists to communicate with others. At the same time, art film has its stance so creators must have their standpoint throughout the script.


Lo noted that Joker can draw the audience's attention within 3 minutes successfully. Since it is not a typical superhero movie and the storyline is about a man who is not accepted by society.
