Veteran Journalist: Freedom of Press in China Is Processing

Reporter / Mandy Lam--095032 2012年3月27日 (二) 22:17 (UTC)

Compare with the June Fourth Incident, nowadays the situation is constantly improving, David Schlesinger said, the Chairman of Thomson Reuters China yesterday.

Journalists may know that freedom of press in China is under restriction after the June Fourth Incident. “We are really blocked and restricted in reporting,” said Schlesinger at Hong Kong Shue Yan University. “Whatever Xinhua (China’s official press agency) says, everybody else follows.”

Unlike the past, these days many mainland newspapers can publish bold and sensitive news.

Besides, Schlesinger said of the social network Weibo "It’s a fortune for journalists. It provides a platform for people to discuss different issues, even sensitive matters."

“We don’t avoid sensitive issues, even though the Central government may be obsessed with journalists' reports,” Schlesinger said. “You need to report the truth.”
