The chairman of the Council of Sustainable Development, Bernard Chan, said he believed waste charging households for waste disposal could efficiently reduce the waste though it may take several years to achieve the goal.

With the waste charging Scheme consultation period ending in this month, Chan said, waste charging for business might be according to weight while for domestic might be according to capacity.

He said, waste charging was like the plastic bag charging scheme, though it would not charge an expensive price, it could change people’s routine.

He said, “50 cent for a plastic bag is not a big deal, but now over 90% people will not ask for extra plastic bags when they go shopping. We hope the waste charging can do the same thing.”

Chan said, even the waste charging implemented, it could not settle the waste problem in a short time. He said, “The landfills still have to be extended.”

Chan said he did not interested to be the next Chief Executive of HKSAR. He said it was a very harsh post, whatever the Chief Executive did never made people satisfied.

“There is no reason for me, and other people like me, want to be the Chief Executive,” he said.
