What is weblog?

A blog (short for weblog) is a personal online journal and a community that is frequently updated and intended for general public consumption with new information about particular topics. Blogs are defined by their format: a series of entries posted to a single page in reverse-chronological order. Blogs generally represent the personality of the author or reflect the purpose of the Web site that hosts the blog. Topics sometimes include brief philosophical musings, commentary on Internet and other social issues, and links to other sites the author favors, especially those that support a point being made on a post. The author of a blog is often referred to as a blogger. Many blogs syndicate their content to subscribers using RSS, a popular content distribution tool.

Why people weblog?

There is a fundamentual need for Internet users to publish what they want and share to the mass audience. They spread thoughts and ideas, in some other extreme cases even manipulate readers' opinion.

More bloggers write passage that attract to others and seek clarification and knowledge on that subject . They search over blogs to have a more comprehensive view on particular public issue, e.g. the US Presidental Election.

It is also a sign of keeping one up on the trend, especially in HK or other Asian cities, e.g. youths concern that being lagged behind on the showbiz gossip on the Internet is nowhere trendy.

Besides, there is no content limitation in weblog, we can discuss all kind of topic in weblog, e.g. music, movie, travel, and so on. What we will post on the weblog/which weblog we will browse is just by our interest.

Is weblog the same as journalism?

Although weblogs are different from traditional media, it is a kind of new journalism. it provides an effective and efficient platform for news sharing.

Media has gate keeper.Reporter will find diferent source to prove the news. The editor will read the news stories and make sure they are based on fact and date, statistics are correct.

Weblog and journalism are different things. We would not find any gatekeepers and fact checkers in Weblog. The nature of the articles in Weblog are more subjective than journalism. On the other hand, journalists may make use of all sources to put in an article in order to make it objective.

However, weblog plays an vital role in journalism field nowadays. Journalists sometimes make use of some articles in particular blog as a source of their coverage. By the way, webloggers are come from different background with specific skills like laws, sports and so forth. Actually, webloggers can provide us professional point of views in some extent.

How does weblog impact on traditional media?

Weblog have had significant impact on journalists, journalism and the new media through their low cost publishing and first hand reporting. It is increasing in popularity and let everyone seems to be able to be a reporter of any kind, not all agree that weblogs are practical form of journalism.

In traditional journalism, the flow of information is rather one-way, from the mainstream media such as newspaper, magazines and TV broadcast to the public. Even if there are some corners like letter-to-the-editor, the way for audience’s reflection is very limited. In weblog, anybody who has the access to Internet can contribute. Not only do they give feedback, they also provide additional information related to certain topics. Besides, weblog provides both the media and the audience with a platform to discuss. The public can enjoy more participation while the media can boost the number of audience. So using weblog for journalism encourages interaction between the journalists and the audience.

Weblog also helps speed up the release and spread of news. Since it is online-based, people can obtain up-to-date information at once through the Internet. This is what traditional journalism cannot do. Owing to relatively low cost, more and more mainstream media like newspaper, magazines, radio and well-known TV news channels tend to open their own weblogs to offer extra information, features and extended content. Thus, they can save time as well as the cost of printing and publication.

In addition, some journalists will use the materials or articles from some weblogs for news editing. It helps broaden the source and the variety of news topic. However, it can be risky because nobody guarantees that the information is completely accurate and genuine.

Do you believe in weblog content?

We cannot totally believe in weblog content by just "take a look" on it. What we need is to prove it and find the evidences to support it. But in long term, the fames of the weblog also affect its credibility.

Compared with journalism, credibility and authority of Weblog are all the time open to question. What distinguishes Weblog from journalism is, the former lacks a gatekeeper who is always responsible for assuring readers all the information is acurate and justified.

Nonetheless, Weblog provides a platform encouraging an open sharing and commentary and hence reinforces interaction 'among' parties, not one-to-one only, but many-to-many probably. In this sense, the verification of an issue becomes possible through continuous discussion. The false ones may be very likely to be eliminated, with those 'true fact' being left.

More than that, weblog in fact is some kind of personal webpage, there is no gatekeepers at all for double-checking and editing the content. Weblog contains usually comments and sharing of experiences and values, it is commonly found that what should be said as "good" on one weblog may sound "bad" on another, and we need to have a critic mind before believing in weblog content.

What are the considerations if you want to create your own weblog?

The security of the web site is very important. The web site must protect our own private data and do not let the stranger to read that, such as the personal infomation, email. etc Besides, the web also have to lock or control the potential attack to weblog. And then, for our own weblog, we would consider if our weblog is attractive. First sight is important, maybe the visiter will visit again only depand on the attractive. If the weblog web site could provide many item or things to make the weblog much more beautiful, it would be the first choice.Besides, the weblog should be user friendly. The use of weblog should be easy enough for those who are not familiar with computer using. If it is too complicated, it will need a lot of time in setting up the weblog,so the weblog should be easy and convenient to use. Finally, the considerations is the popularity of the weblog. While we setting up a weblog, we want to share something with the other especially to our friends. Therefore, the considerations of choosing a weblog is that the weblog should be popular, more people may read our weblog.

Which kind of weblogs do you read most?

I like reading celebrities' weblogs such as Donald Tsang Blog with link http://www.ceo.gov.hk/blog/eng/index.html It is because I can know how he feels on particular topic. For example, he has finished the 'Middle East Trip' recently. I can know how he felt about the trip and things happened in Middle East. It is very interesting to get to know the celebrities' feeling from their blog.(By Kobi)

I like to read my friend's blog and my hero's blog. My friends will post their real life stories on their blogs. Those stories may be part of our memory together, our comment topics. My heroes will write their editoral and opinion about social hot issues on their blogs. They provide me different angles to read news.[1][2]
