WeiBo is a popular social network in China and became the first medium to tell people about the Wenzhou train collision. Qian Gang believes “WeiBo is a gift from God” and hopes China media can have more freedom.

Director of the China Media Project at The University of Hong Kong Journalism and Media Studies Center, Qian Gang, attended a media seminar held in Hong Kong Shue Yan University and revealed that China media was prohibited to report on the collision as the government tried to cover the dark side of the story. Qian said, “ WeiBo was the first medium to expose the collision, people posted on Weibo when they saw the train ran in a slow speed”. Though people may think that internet might trigger a downfall for traditional media, Qian believed WeiBo can “lead to an improvement in media”, since it gives people a way to bring out the truth to Chinese that they have not be able to see before, and a gift to Chinese.

WeiBo spread information in a faster speed than media, everyone can become a reporter nowadays with the help of social network. Simply a post can let people know thing that was hided or neglected. Though China media do not have as much freedom as the media in Hong Kong, WeiBo has become a way to let people gain more information than they used to. “WeiBo let everyone to be a medium”, says Qian. He does not know if the China Media will be having more freedom, but he hopes that will come along.
