China is always criticized for having no freedom of speech. Since the government controls all media agencies, everything is under control. However, the high speed train crash accident, which caused over 30 deaths, broke that rule. The first information of this tragedy, was not from official or any traditional media, but it came from the new media, Weibo.

Qian Gang, the University of Hong Kong's Journalism and Media Studies Centre Co-Director of China Media Project, commented that Weibo, a kind of micro-blog, “Provides a new channel for the media.” He thought it plays an important role in media field.

The micro-blog opens another way of reporting, as sometimes it performs better than traditional media, and gives the audience a full picture of the story. Qian gave an example; Wen Jiabao gave a speech after 723 accident, but broadcasting media does not do the live show, but the reporter use Weibao to tell what Wen said, and they kept update every minute. (((run-on)))
