“It is an irreversible truth that Weibo is an icon of new media,” said Li Fang, the vice editor of Tencent Weibo, in the General Assembly of Hong Kong Shue Yan University.

According to Li, there are 485 million internet users while 195 million have a Weibo account. In his point of view, Weibo is good at spreading messages rapidly. Also, everyone in Weibo can be the reporter. “Users can share their feelings, and disclose injustice in the society. News are no longer just released by traditional media at the same time. This brings a remarkable change on releasing messages,” Li explained. Lastly, Weibo can mobilize users greatly which means influences are unpredictable.

With the popularity of Weibo, it challenges the traditional media. For examples, Weibo users announced the death news of Michael Jackson and Osama bin Laden even faster than CNN and the local media.

Nevertheless, Li believed that Weibo and the traditional media are not mutually exclusive. Weibo will not replace the traditional media too. After all, news is an eternal need.
