Weibo brings Chinese closer to the World

By Jerome Lai 095168

The PRC government controls the Chinese media tightly. Chinese journalisst and internet users are always trying to break though this control, publish news and messages that would not be approved, and let people know more about their society and the world.

“People sharing international news on Weibo instantly, such as the case of the March 11 Earthquake in Japan and the death of Bin Laden, brings the Chinese closer to the world,” Tencent Weibo Deputy Editor-in-Chief Li Fang said in an academic conference. [How or why does people sharing news on Weibo bring Chinese closer to the world? You have to explain this idea, not just state it.]

Although PRC officials will delete those messages (“He Xie”), it still stays on the internet for at least five minutes, as the internet is too large to look over instantly.

On the July 23 WenChou DongChe Accident, many Chinese media stepped on the line, and tried not to follow the rules. “They published news that related to the accident, by using information that was approved by the official, such as quoting the Premier Wen Jiabao’s speech to comment on or criticize the PRC government,” Journalism and Media Centre of the University of Hong Kong, Professor Qian Gang said.

“Don’t judge China and Chinese media using only black and white,” Qian added. In CCTV, there are journalists fighting for freedom of press, and there (are also people work not good enough ???).

“Weibo is a gift from god,” Qian said. Although he couldn’t foresee the future situation of Chinese media, he still encouraged people to use Weibo to help its progression.
