“Weibo is a gift from god,” said Qian Gang, a senior journalist and the author of “Great Tangshan earthquake”, in a seminar at Hong Kong Shue Yan University yesterday. He believes Weibo is a new medium of communication that allows media to release news quicker and easier.

The Wenzhou train collision in July (date, year?), which led to 35 deaths and 211 injured, was the most serious railway accident in Chinese history. Due to the government’s (straight?) restriction in reporting the accident, media tried to post the story at blogs and it is adopted as a new kind of mass media.

“The China government has(vt-when did it happen?) prohibited media from reporting the accident, but latest information about the accident was spread out over the internet. (It is because-informal) there is not only one way. We are so lucky to have a gift from god, that is Weibo,” said Qian.

Since media still have to act under lots of constraints in China, it is difficult (for it-inap) to breakthrough in the foreseeable future. But the use of Internet as a news source is increasing rapidly, thereby creating a new channel to spread out latest public news. Qian believes Weibo has been changing the mode of news production gradually.

“It is not easy for the government to control Weibo because it allows users to post updated news immediately. It will be a new strategy for the mass media to explore if it is used efficiently,” added Qian.

The reader could use a bit more specific information about Weibo-users, and type of censored information available on Weibo.
