1. What is wiki?

Wiki is the simplest online database that could possibly work and a free encyclopedia on the internet. It is a piece of server software that allows anyone to freely create, edit and link web pages content using any Web browser easily. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has a simple text syntax for creating new pages and crosslinks between internal pages on the fly.

Wiki is unusual among group communication mechanisms in that it allows the organization of contributions to be edited in addition to the content itself. It is a peer production of all kinds of interests.

Like many simple concepts, "open editing" has some profound and subtle effects on Wiki usage. Allowing everyday users to create and edit any page in a Web site is exciting in that it encourages democratic use of the Web and promotes content composition by nontechnical users.

2. Why people use wiki?

Wiki has some features (browser based, easy editing, easy linking, simple formatting, visible links, searching, etc) that make collaboration more possible.

It is good for letting other people know what is going on, what was decided, and for finding anything later. Being able to quickly put things in a wiki and forward a link is very useful. A wiki is immediately editable which makes it possible to easily add content.

The wiki makes linking natural and it is the one common place for abbreviations. Every document is full of knowledge bits like abbreviations that cry out to be made acessible and linkable from other documents.

Also wiki has a transclusion feature InsertPage that allows a page to be made out of other pages so information can be in one big document and in separate page chunks as well.

7. How wiki help create knowledge? How is it important in terms of efficiency and effectiveness in creating knowledge?

GROUP 4

I) Knowledge is a mental grasp of a fact(s) of reality, reached either by perceptual observation or by a process of reason based on perceptual observation. Wiki supply a big hypertext database for everyone to create every topic and supply every information, even you are professional or common. Therefore, I think wiki can collect much more knowledge form every part in the world. It can help the knowledge to create in a environment that contain many different information. 051008 Lee Yun Hong 2008年3月6日 (四) 11:14 (UTC)

II) Wiki is online-based, so everybody can obtain and create information freely and quickly as long as they have the access of the Internet. The wiki tools help people a large and open-to-all database, which store plenty of information. The tools also help people to create what caters their needs. In terms of efficiency and effectiveness, it helps people save a lot of time on reading printed materials. They have more time to obtain more information, and to analyze them. If the wiki-users find that the page content is still insufficient, they can further look for other data by clicking the back links and references listed at the bottom part. 041007 SIU CORINNE HANG KI

8. What would you add in order to enrich HKNews [2]?

GROUP 4

I) In HKNews, visitors almost are HKSYU student of Journalism & Communication, the aim of visiting usually for homework. Therefore, I prefer quote some topic about local or international news, and let Journalism students or every student to discuss. Beside, it can let more visitor go to this wiki, and also improve the sensitive of students in every news. 051008 Lee Yun Hong 2008年3月6日 (四) 11:14 (UTC)

II) I would like to add a poll section to enrich http://hknews.hksyu.edu. It is without doubt that this wiki project has displayed abundant information for students learning. However, some find that these data are neither sufficient nor relevant to they want. When people search for certain topics, the wiki system simply provides them with a chunk of information. They have to spend more time on choosing the relevant materials instead. Therefore, I suggest the addition of poll module on the page layout which shows the readers’ comment and the percentage of each poll result. This helps people filter information. Also, editors can improve the page content with reference to the comment.
