Win Ma may change CNA If Ma Ying Jeou, the Chairman of the Nationalist Party, wins the President Election on 22 March, Taiwan media would get more freedom in news reporting, said Stanley Cheung.
Stanley Cheung, Correspondent of Central News Agency (CNA), said "News reporting is always strict by political stance of the ruling party.” said. The chief editor always asks him indirectly to have more negative reports on China. He thinks “Nationalist Party has a high chance of creating amity between the two regions, thus it ensure a higher degree of press freedom than now."
During the Taipei mayor election 1998, Cheung wanted to make a balance report on the two candidates, Ma Ying Jeou and Chen Shui Bian. “However, the higher-ups told us not to include much news that favors Ma Ying Jeou.” He said. CNA had a bias to the ruling party that had strict the press freedom.
Besides, CNA as news agency of Taiwan, it had many difficulties for reporting international news. Cheung explained “Taiwan is not a sovereign state so that we cannot get the pass to report the international news, like the meeting of UN and WHO.” He hope the win of Ma Ying Jeou might change this situation.
