There is a reason for jump ship

WONG Wai Kay, Ricky, the Chairman of City Telecom (H.K.) Limited (CTL), attended a talk in a university and showed his confidence in getting the Domestic Free Television Programme Service License for his new TV station.


“It is for sure the Free license will be delivered to us, it’s only the matter of time now. No matter what, it won’t affect the plan and running of our TV station.” Wong said.


The new TV station will be set up at Tseung Kwan O industrial estate. Wong claimed that it would be the largest television production center in Asia. The new production center reaches 22 hundred thousand square feet, and is estimated to spend up to 800 million dollars.


At this stage, Wong has already recruited half of the script writers, directors and production staff from Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB). Wong laughed out in confidence, said, “Tell me what you are going to watch in next season when half of their staff jump ship to my station?”


Wong revealed that he doesn’t like the traditional TV soap opera production system. The old system focuses on the boss order, not the independency the production team it owns. Wong said that staff from creative department should be well respected.


He cited an example of art painting. “The name of the painter or artist usually comes before the art work. It is the right way how artists (creative staff) should be respected.”


“My new system won’t be in royal rule, order from boss or senior staff weighs less from the old system.” He guaranteed independency of script writer, producer and director.


Poon Man Hung, current recruited senior script writer of CTL television, revealed the process how she decided to jump ship from TVB to CTL.


“Actually TVB pays the same amount of salary to hold me back from jumping ship, it is totally not the same as what other media coverage says.” Poon continued, “However, I want to improve. The way how staff can communicate to boss Wong Wai Kay really impresses me. We can strike for what we plan to do, not just follow the order from boss.”


Wong Wai Kay claimed himself as the best human resource to set up a new operating structure in the new station. He is confident that the new system will maximize staff productivity and efficiency.


“A new rating-bonus linked system will be introduced in soap opera production department. The amount of year-end bonus depends on staff production, the higher rating their production gain, the higher amount of their bonus will be.” Wong said.
