Dec 11th—Mr. Wong Ying Xi, the chairperson of broadcast codes of practice committee, said at a university lecture that news is the fundamental requirement for a television station, refuting the chairman of CTI.

“Actually news is the soul of the station,” said Mr. Wong, “what’s the existing meaning of station or mass media if they don’t make news for the public?”

He was referring to a statement by Ricky Wong, the chairman of CTI, last Sunday that said he would put major focus on TV dramas and programs production, and that “news is not an important part in my station".

Wong Ying Xi commented that the public know about the reality through news broadcast on the mass media.

“People even don’t know what happened if there is no news,” Wong said, added that “how could the mass media take the responsibility for the public if they don’t make the news?”

On the issue of free television licences, Mr. Wong rejected the statement “political pressure leads to delay of free television licenses” put forward by Mr. Leung, the dean of Journalism & Communication department of the university.

“Nowadays the word ‘political pressure’ is used indiscriminately,” said Mr. Wong, “the reasons that the free television licenses aren’t granted are complicated. What we can do now is to follow the development process and obey what chief governor and executive council’s final decision.”

When mentioned whether the increasing number of televisions will lead to vicious competition, Mr. Wong said he is willing to see that situation.

“There is no benign competition in this world,” Mr. Wong said, added “more televisions will give the audience more choices which are good for the public in the end.”
