Ivan M.W. Yau, former TVB anchor concluded four requirements from his broadcasting experience on how to be a good reporter, which are patient, sense of responsibility, well emotion control and persistence.

Ivan said, skeptical character is essential to be a good reporter. “You have to be strong-minded, in order to find a good news angle… It’s all about being critical to the information you received.” He shared that a good news story usually originates from a doubt of reporter.

“It’s difficult for someone who lacks of his own stance to be a good reporter. You should hold your question, prove it, instead of fully adopt what the interviewee want you to express. A professional reporter should never satisfy to be a recorder.” Yau added.

Yau graudated from psychology major, he said the learning experience of being an anchor is a challenge to his adaptability. “In fact, facing such a dynamic working environment, every single moment is a challenge.”

As he recalled that at the beginning, he knew nothing about being a professional reporter. “I was confident about my Chinese expression, but then my editor proved that I am wrong. It’s not about my proficiency of Chinese, a good broadcasting script differs from a good passage a lot.”
