You can Voice in Opposite Side in China

Although there are restrictions in China reporting, more reporters could criticize the government’s policy based on the facts, said a senior journalist in a university talk heard yesterday.

"You should use a long perspective to investigate the different between now and before of China," said David Schlesinger, Chairman of Thomson Reuters China. When he stayed in Beijing in 1991 to 1994, he memorized that all of the media in China ought to obey to the Chinese government and follow the instruction of reporting the news. However, the freedom of speech was increased. Some media could voice in opposite side now.

"Fundamentally, it is a journey. Everything needs a progress. China opens up slowly and people of China want to express themselves, like 200 million people in weibo. Now the number of users continues to increase,” Schlesinger said. Those Chinese used this platform to have discussion freely. It showed the freedom of speech and reporting China would keep changing positively. [Great exposition!]

Nowadays, information is transferred faster and easier. Geographic location is less of a restriction. Also, the relations between Hong Kong and mainland became closer. Many Hong Kong reporters would have a chance to stay in China for reporting. However, sometimes, the journalists were caught by the police because of illegal reporting [What is illegal reporting? If freedom of the press is increasing, what are the limits? What can be reported now, that could not be reported before?].

Schlesinger also reminded that a new journalist should not afraid of China reporting. “You are a reporter. You do not predict the future. You just report the things that happened in front of you. If there is a very interesting story, you report.” He described that it was too dangerous for a reporter to predict the future of the news [Why?]. A professional journalist ought to keep questioning, interviewing and investigation the events, both of them based on fact. The time could prove the source and give the answer.
