“Ideal must come first,” says Osacr Lai, the spokesperson of the Scholarism Reported by WONG Chun-ki

“Ideal must come first, and then formulate the practical actions,” said Oscar Lai Man-lok, the spokesperson of the Scholarism today in Hong Kong Shue Yan University.

The Scholarism was the first organisations to put forward a proposal for the 2017 chief executive poll, due to be decided by universal suffrage. They proposed that the “broadly representative” nominating committee, which under the Basic Law will select the candidates of chief executive, have to include all 3.2 million voters. However, there are many opinions which different from their proposal, for instance, the Occupy Central founder Benny Tai You-ting and Chan Kin-man. The group’s spokesperson, Lai, said that they accept the criticisms and modify the details, yet they will not give up the idea of universal suffrage.

A student asked Lai if they acted way too drastic. Lai replied, “We are mentally drastic but not physically.” He further explained that they did not use physical conflict like other organisations and they always accept different opinions.

The Scholarism, founded in 2011 by a group of Hong Kong students, who mostly are studying in secondary schools and universities, care about those Hong Kong social issues.
