19th Febuary, 2013

by Raymond Hui (Hui Kun Lam)

“We have enough to survive, no financial difficulties” said by Kai Kwong Ngai, chief editor of local newspaper Sing Pao.

“Sing Pao is at the middle among different local paid newspapers” Ngai said although there is Internet and free newspapers, paid newspapers still enjoy a higher advertising amount than before. Ngai said that the curiosity of Mainlanders, can be one reason, “political magazines got up to more than 10, there is only 2 in 1997 (Handover)”, he said there are many differences between Mainland and Hong Kong, including the media, so some individual visitors may buy local newspapers for collection or share among friends, Ngai said loyalty of horse race gamblers and demand of detailed news also reasons to support the run of paid newspapers.

Ngai said that Sing Pao take advantage of her mother family-L’sea China, a real-estate company based in Guangzhou, having Guangzhou news center and offices in different cities in China, Ngai said local offices can build relationship with local government officials, businessmen and public, which can have more Mainland news with majority of Hong Kong local news. He said as they are not constitutional newspaper but a privately-owned one, they can do bad side news like corruption, not only pro-government.
