Performing Arts: Road to an Industry

16th April, 2013

by Raymond Hui (Hui Kun Lam)

Tang Shu-wing, former Dean of the School of Drama of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, said that the government should help performing arts turning to self-sufficient industry.

Tang said that, the previous support by Hong Kong government regards the performing arts as a tool for servicing the society, which can be seen in number of shows and lower price of performances. Tang said the government should help the performing arts as a self-sufficient industry as further development. Tang said although the WKCD has been complained as too much commercial portion, the property development gives funds to the art development, and can be regarded as a step to the move.

Tang also said that, long lasting drama can be one way worth the try to self-sufficient industry. Tang said attractive works like Phantom of Arts, the show itself and merchandise sales allow profitable income to the industry. Tang said these works won’t be replaced by other works for long time. Turning performance arts into an industry allows more than economic, but also balance with social, economic and tourism aspects.
