WKCD Should have Underground Streety

23rd April, 2013

by Raymond Hui (Hui Kun Lam)

“Hong Kong Government should make use of the opportunities from the express railway project in West Kownloon Cultural District (WKCD),” said K.P. Cheung, Associate Professor, of HKU Architecture Department.

Cheung said that as WKCD is purposed in 2006, which didn’t involve the consideration of the express railway terminal purposed after 2010. He said that although WKCD’s plan has been approved, there are still rooms for development suiting the passenger’s economic force bought by the express railway. Cheung said that in previous 10 years, Hong Kong visitors have been increased for 2 times from 16 million to 48 million, and the government should cater the trend of new visitors from the express railway network.

Cheung also said that compared to inland area, the land in WKCD is reclaimed land, developing underground street is easier, only using metal plates to build without obstructions from big rocks and wartime bombs. Cheung added that the area for underground street is basically useless without such development, and it worth “paying the rent for the development” since the land price in Hong Kong is so high. Cheung thinks that the underground street can utilize the passenger flow from the express railway station and bringing relief to support cultural industry.
