【8th December, 2015 Ellen Wong】Agnes Lam, Assistant Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences of University of Macau, said the media should make a change in the development.

CUP Magazine had announced closing down the company last week. Lam explained, the profit of print media was hard to maintain a balance. ‘Readers want newspapers with less advertising, informative and attractive content. But they are not willing to pay for the subscriptions,’ Lam said. She thought the quality of report content would improve if readers agreed to pay for newspaper. She quoted the World Press Trend Report 2014, said the newspaper circulation in Asia was still increasing. 270million people received information through newspaper, which were much higher than 80million people using the electronic media. Lam believed that print media had its survival space.

Lam said, 80% of people looked at their mobile phone in the first 15minutes they woke up. Everyday, people used their phone for 147 minutes and received information by browsing the social media platform. Hence, it was a trend putting news on the mobile platform. Lam thought people over rely on the social media, and neglect other channels to receive message. She suggested print media to pay attention on both print and social channel in order to overcome the obstacles.
