Audience’s demand and the technical capabilities of devices allowed new forms of news, said Danny Wong, the art director of Sing Tao Group.

“There must be support from audience which encouraged companies to report news via illustrations and videos,” said Wong.

Wong said, due to convenience, people prefer listening to news via digital devices than holding a newspaper while they were in a crowded car.

“Newspaper companies do not only have to report news, but also meet the demand in the market and audiences’ needs,” he said.

However, it was useless to have an excellent layout without matching with technology. “In the past, people would not bring their computers out

and the fiber traffic could not afford heavy data. So it was impracticable for news animation,” Wong said.

Under the “instant culture” in Hong Kong, Wong explained that art directors needed to create great layouts within a short period of time and

also kept an eye on the surroundings and reminded the reporters which kinds of photos to take.

Wong did not oppose to parodies and he regarded it as a “social act”. “It’s common in foreign countries. There was no problem if the act

did not harm or hurt anybody. However, it was hard to judge if the act had gone too far,” he said.
